Breeding top quality discus fish for your aquarium.

About Us image
Welcome to Clifton Discus.
We have been involved in the discus fish hobby for many years, including the breeding of these wonderfull fish.
All of our discus fish are bred by ourselves here in the uk.  The fish are grown out to at least 2-3 inches in size ready for sale to the public.
Our fish are raised and thrive in dechlorinated tapwater with a ph of almost 8, so very easy to keep whatever your ph is, (ph 6 - 8 is reccomended) and no need for fancy water softeners or ro water !
Our breeding pairs have been sourced from many of the premium suppliers from all over the world...

We are a modest sized hobbyist breeder. Our prices are extremely competetive and the best around for comparable high quality, healthy, disease free fish. We do not charge premium prices for "newer" or "more popular" strains. All of our colour varieties are all the same price which make them great value for money, particularly the bigger fish compared to other sellers. All of our larger fish have been grown out here, so we have not had to pay a premium for them, which means we can offer them at fantastic prices. We have also kept these fish for many months so we are 100% sure they are healthy, parasite & disease free.  There is no obligation to buy on your visit if you just want to take a look and have a chat (good idea if your a first time discus keeper). So feel free to contact us for a visit.
We are based in the village of Clifton Campville, near Tamworth, Staffordshire. Our fish are housed in our fish house at the rear of our residential address.
Viewing and sales are by appointment only. Please contact us via email or text/watsapp to arrange a visit.

LOOKING AFTER YOUR DISCUS.

We keep our fish in water of ph 8  but they will do well any where between ph 6.0 and 8.0 so long as the ph is stable.
We recommend a uv sterilizer is used as this keeps the bacteria levels in the water column down (discus do not deal with high bacteria levels well). You can do without a uv sterilizer if your prepared to do multiple water changes per week in large amounts as this also keeps bacteria in the water column low.
Temperature should be between 28c and 30c for general keeping.
Water changes are best carried out twice a week and around 30 - 40% each time. We recommend using water that has passed through a hma filter. We must stress, when buying fish under 4" in size they will need big water changes very regularly to ensure they continue to grow properly as they should. We would recommend minimum 50% twice a week, any amount bigger or more often is even better and will further ensure you get maximum growth. Please also remember young small discus have not developed their full colours yet if any at all.
We feed a fish based diet including our own frozen food, granular and freeze dried. We do not feed beefheart as we try to keep it as natural as possible and have great results doing so. There are lots of cases of discus going off there food and getting intestinal problems and we suspect beefheart doesnt help this matter.
Never keep less than 6 discus together, they are a shouling fish and the more the better.

If you follow the above you wont go far wrong 👍🙂

COMMON PROBLEMS

Discus fish stop eating:

occasionaly you can find yourself with a fish that stops eating and isnt interested at feeding time. The exact reason for this is never clear and can be for many reasons. Theres one thing that you should try and usually gets them eating again within a week or two...turn up the temperature to 34c. This speeds up their metabolism and encourages the fish to feed again.
-----‐-------------------------

Fish breathing rapidly or out of only one gill:

Firstly check your water parameters as high ammonia or nitrite can cause these symptoms.
Normally this is caused by the fish being infested with gill flukes. Treat the whole tank with an anti gill fluke treatment.
------------------------------

Discus darting rapidly around the tank for no obvious reason:

2 things can be the culprit here.
Firstly...gas bubble disease, this happens mainly in winter and is caused by adding really cold water into the aquarium. The cold water mixing with warm water of the aquarium causes microscopic gas bubbles and the fish ingest them, causing severe distress.
Secondly...and more likely is fish eating "gone off" food. Food particals can get trapped under ornaments etc, it goes off and if the fish eat it they get infected with a type of fungus in the gut. The fish will dart about uncontrollably bashing itself off of ornaments, tank glass etc in severe distress. If these symptoms appear you must stop feeding and starve the fish for 7 days. If you dont stop feeding the symptoms will carry on and the fish will die.
Always syphon out all uneaten food after 10 minutes.
------------------------------

A bully in the tank ! :

Discus are after all cichlids, and any group will establish a pecking order. Unfortunately sometimes you will get one fish that dominates nearly all the fish. This can cause problems at feeding times as the other fish cant get a look in, also constant bullying will cause stress that inevatively leads to health problems. This scenario is usually solved by adding more fish so as to spread the aggression and make it not so easy for the bully fish. Groups of ten fish or more rarely experience this problem, any less and it can easily happen.
------------------------------

Hole in head disease (hith):

This is a nasty disease that spreads very rapidly and if not caught early can see the death of your fish. The fish pictured had been suffering this disease for only a week to get to the stage it did. There are a few theories as to why fish get this, some say lack of minerals in the tank water, dirty tank conditions, carbon in filters, stress, etc etc. If your fish gets this it would pay to eliminate the above mentioned possible causes. To cure this a well known proven treatment is firstly a very clean tank and substrate, then treat the whole tank with waterlife octozin. Follow the instructions exactly. The fish in the picture recovered with this treatment in one week.
